Bridal Style Through the Years

Every modern type of wedding gowns, from sleek sheath silhouettes to trendy tulle ballgowns, were all inspired by centuries of wedding gown styles! Have you ever sat down together with your mom, grandma or relative and looked back on a few of the old wedding trends? You probably laughed or marveled in the high lace necklines and shoulder pads – but you’d be amazed how many of these fashion statements are earning a comeback! Take a look at wedding gown styles through the years:

We can thank the Roaring Twenties for 2 super popular wedding styles: beaded gowns and cathedral length veils! Flapper style gowns introduced the drop waist silhouettes plus some even displayed the calf, that was considered “daring” for your time period.

Today’s Trend: As mentioned, we are able to thank today for giving us gorgeous, glam beading and caplet sleeves, as featured on Martina Liana Style 1287. Inspired through the Art Deco movement from the 1920s, this vintage fit-and-flare dress includes a striking geometric lace design accented with elaborate beading, pearls, and sequins. Echo the decade’s veil trend using the volume and period of this gown’s detachable overskirt.

The 1930’s brought romantic styles, like high necklines and long sleeves, alive! Silk would be a sign of wealth, but when brides couldn’t pay the fabric they'd opt for Rayon for the same effect.

Today’s Trend: The thirties featured figure-skimming silhouettes and silk-like fabrics that basked in sophistication. We can find similar trends in Martina Liana Luxe Style LE1155. Sleek, chic and unique, this silk satin wedding gown has long gathered sleeves along with a tied keyhole back for any subtle statement.

Trends didn’t change much between your thirties and forties, so those long-sleeved wedding gowns reigned supreme for a long time! V-necks were introduced like a luxurious new style and brides started wearing corsets as shapewear.

Today’s Trend: The V-neckline and long-sleeved style match Stella York Style 7317. The simple silhouette features intricate lace and layers of tulle to have an undeniably romantic look. The bodice’s plunging V-neckline results in a sweetly sexy effect. Fabric-covered buttons in the bottom from the deep-V back bring an ageless bridal touch.

The 1950’s changed wedding fashion drastically! Extravagant, full skirts and sweetheart necklines began to take off. Shorter veils became popular as brides chosen grand ballgowns.

Today’s Trend: We still see sweetheart necklines and ballgowns as a few of the most popular wedding gown styles! For example, Essense of Australia Style D3314. This classic bridal beauty is adorned with nature-inspired lace in the sweetheart V-neckline towards the bottom from the full ballgown skirt. Off-the-shoulder straps along with a subtle V back give a little drama towards the gown.

Styles became a lot more slim and shorter within the sixties! There would be a resurgence of high necklines, but those were balanced out with much shorter hemlines as miniskirts took within the fashion industry.

Today’s Trend: While miniskirt wedding gowns have declined in popularity within the years, the slim style has lived on within the sheath silhouette. The All Who Wander Adley gown provides a modern spin about this 1960s trend. The sheath dress includes a high halter neckline but is elevated with graphic cut laces along with a bold center plunge.

Despite lots of change between your 50’s and 60’s, the 70’s were a nod to nostalgia. Older styles came back towards the forefront – like full sleeves, plenty of layers and much more coverage.

Today’s Trend: Long hemlines and sleeves are extremely popular in today’s collections.

They evoke an intimate sophistication that draws inspiration from older eras. Love the feel of a seventies gown? Try Stella York Style 7291. A V-neckline may be the focal point from the gown’s lace bodice and it is accented on each side with a slightly-wide neckline that extends into long, illusion-lace sleeves.

Oh, the eighties! An absolutely iconic era in most things, especially fashion! This decade saw a rise from the “poof” – giant, voluminous gowns company, shoulder pads.

Today’s Trend: Brides today still love the breathtaking drama of the stunning ballgown! More is much more, with everything from big hair, cascading bouquets and cathedral length veils. Bring the shimmer with Martina Liana Style 1371, a fairytale masterpiece that demands to become worn by glamorous brides.

The nineties brought us to slimmer styles and also the sheath dress silhouette was extremely popular!

Today’s Trend: Where are our minimalistic brides at? You can thank today for bringing bridal fashion down again to earth with casual wedding styles and way less fabric. If you love a vintage sheath gown, browse the All Who Wander Aiden gown. A V-neckline— complete having a cowl neck swoop— gives this vintage-inspired satin gown an ultra-chic look.

Simplicity remained within the 2000’s, with strapless dresses and understated styles using the lead.

Today’s Trend: Mermaid styles, in addition to silk fabrics, are still a few of the main features modern brides want for his or her dream dress. If you love a stylish, 2000’s inspired gown, adore Essense of Australia Style D3340; A pointed neckline frames the face area beautifully and it is complemented with delicate ruching through the bodice.

Just as brides were disregarding long sleeve wedding dresses Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding dresses during this decade brought the design and style into the spotlight again.

Today’s Trend: For brides inspired by royal wedding fashion, look no farther than Martina Liana Style 1302. The sheer lace long sleeves, semi-sheer bodice, and wide keyhole back provide a formal search for the modern age. The train is really a beauty to behold using its scalloped edging and organic finishes.

Today’s brides are only for finding the perfect dress to reflect their individual personality. They don’t be put off by shine or sexiness when choosing a trendy gown for his or her big day.

Today’s Trend: Essense of Australia Style D3345 is definitely an absolute showstopper. With head-to-toe glitter, you’re certain to stand out in your wedding day. Plus, this gown includes a corset-inspired bodice that is extremely popular right now, with expertly-placed boning through the bust and waist.

Which era was your preferred style inspiration? Comment below and find out the entire collections by Essense of Australia, Stella York, Martina Liana, and All Who Wander.

Periwinkle Blue And Pink Wedding Thoughts

One of the ways we like to help brides-to-be is by suggesting different color combos for their bridesmaid dresses. In fact, ways of working color through all the aspects of a wedding party.

And today, because spring is most definitely on its way (and about time too) we're going to feature a periwinkle blue and pink color theme.

It's a really romantic color mix. Delicate, classic, dreamy and really, really lovely.

Mix the two together and your maids can choose the shade that suits them best.

Talk to your florist about flower options. We're thinking pink peonies, blush pink roses, forget-me-nots, cornflowers, delphiniums. Don't feel you have to have exact color matches, it looks much better to mix it up a bit.

Same applies with your bridesmaid frocks. Windsor blue, periwinkle and blush are some color options from Dessy, but all these shades can be mixed and matched together and will blend beautifully. (Think a sort of ombre effect).

If you'd like some help choosing your colors and working out which combo you like best, then check Dessy's Pantone color tools, which give you the right shades so you can communicate them to your florist, bridal designer, venue, cake decorator - and whoever needs to know.

Tie your wedding bouquet (and maybe the bridesmaid bouquets) with red and pink ribbons, in a soft gauze.

We love floaty chiffons and lighter fabrics with these colors, especially if you're having a rustic style wedding day and getting married in the afternoon.

As the bride, you could give a nod to the theme with your bouquet of course - but also maybe with some delicate blush pink wedding shoes or blue, peeking out shyly from the hem of your wedding gown.

Flower crowns are definitely having a moment right now, so consider them for your maids, or even yourself, if it's a https://www.feeltimes.com/ sort of an event. They look super cute on flowergirls of course.

As for your groom, take a look at the light, tan colored suits which would work so well with pale pinks and blues for bow ties, vests and maybe socks!

What You MUST Think About Before You Agree To Being A Bridesmaid

It's a tricky one, that's to be sure.

Your BFF, sister, cousin or another close friend is getting married and the atmosphere is infectious. It's so easy to get caught up in the excitement yourself and say 'yes' when she asks you to be a bridesmaid, without thinking it through.

(And you may be surprised to have been asked anyway.)

Are You Ready To Be A Bridesmaid?

It's actually quite a commitment in many ways, particularly if the bride has asked you to be her chief maid of honor.

So here's a few things that you need to be thinking about before you agree.

Can you afford it? This may (or actually it may) not be first thing you think about when you say yes, but you should take into consideration whether you can afford to be a bridesmaid. Depending on your role in the bridal party, you will be paying for a portion of the bachelorette party, bridal shower gift, a bridesmaid dress, shoes, hair and makeup, gifts for the bride and groom. And any other incidentals that may come up.

Do you have the time? We all have our own lives even, when someone close to us like a friend and family member is getting married, so you have to stop and think whether you really have the time to devote to the bride and the tasks at hand. Will you need to take time off work or away from home for the necessary appointments and the wedding? While it's hard to predict what happens down the road, if you know you cannot devote the time to being a bridesmaid, you may have to politely say no.

How close are you to the bride? Before you say “yes” to being a bridesmaid, you may want to consider how close you actually are to the bride. This is important because you will be spending a lot of devoted time and money on her, so it is important to weigh this out before stepping forward as a bridesmaid.

Do you have the patience to be a bridesmaid? If the answer is “no” then you may want to consider not saying “yes” to the bride. You will need to be prepared to provide an ear and emotional support when the bride is stressed out. Are you prepared to wear a dress that may be less than flattering for your body type? Because unless the bride is really thoughtful, she may have already decided what you will wear, without taking into account what her maids would prefer.

What To Say If You'd Rather Not

It's much better to be upfront early on and politely decline the offer, rather than feel frustrated and put upon by the demands being made on you. Your friendship is much more likely to survive if you keep a little distance and your boundaries intact.

If the bride asks why, you could say that you want to be 100% there for her but work/family/financial/location commitments will make it difficult and you don't want to let her down.

Explain that while you are thrilled to be asked, you think the bride would be better off asking somebody else. Instead you could ask to be given a particular task that you can manage - for example scouring eBay for vintage brooches for a vintage-styled wedding day. Ask the bride what she needs help with in the wedding planning and take over responsibility for a role you can manage.

That way you won't fall out and you'll still be a help to the bride and there when she needs you.

ACCESSORIZING ON YOUR BIG DAY

Once you’ve found the perfect wedding dress, you’re not quite done with your bridal look—you still need to decide how you plan to accessorize your dress on your wedding day! Finding the right accessories is a big decision. You want to find something that complements your dress while showing off your personal style, and sometimes this can be a hard balance to find. To help inspire you, we’re sharing a few of our favorite tips for finding the perfect accessories!

If you’re looking to add a touch of sparkle to your dress, we love a gorgeous statement necklace. This adds a hint of vintage flair and brings attention to you decolletage—for dresses with strapless and off-the-shoulder necklines especially, adding a necklace like this gives it the perfect added detail to elevate your look.

If you have a unique or heavily embellished neckline like this dress, a fun, unexpected way to add a hint of sparkle is with a hair comb. Unique and gorgeous, a hair comb can create a stunning look, especially when paired with a veil. Whether you’re looking for a boho floral-inspired comb or a vintage-inspired piece, a hair comb is great for dresses that you’re unsure about pairing a necklace with.

For simple, understated dresses, we love the look of a subtle, balanced matching set of jewelry like this necklace and bracelet combo. This gives a gorgeous, subtle look that complements your simple dress without overpowering it, highlighting your natural beauty.

While many ateliers have been hard at work sewing masks for frontline workers, designers and their teams have also been operating as normally as possible—which means doing everything from creating new collections to fulfilling wedding dress orders and arranging virtual consultations with brides. If you're planning to get married sometime in late 2021 or 2022, it's time to start shopping for your wedding dress! Take a peek at what's trending in the bridal fashion world to gain some ideas for your own look.

Short Wedding Dresses

Short wedding dresses have spiked in popularity since last year, and they're still on track to become one of the top wedding dress trends in 2022. Whether you’re eloping and want a throw-on-and-go look, or you’re in the market for a white dress to wear at a wedding-related event, there are so many reasons to rock a shorter hemline. Strut your stuff in a thigh-skimming mini wedding dress or keep it more demure by opting for a midi or tea-length style. Either way, the fact that your feet won’t be hidden under a dress is a perfect reason to splurge on a fabulous pair of shoes for the big day (especially if you've missed wearing heels!).

Tell us about your proposal…

We are from Florida and in December 2018, we flew to Park City, Utah, to see snow for the first time! We were there for a few days and we walked out to a snowy field in front of the beautiful mountains where Sky proposed to me. My best friend (also a wedding photographer), Caroline, popped out from behind the trees to photograph the whole thing. I had no idea she was there and she made the trip across the country secretly coordinating with Sky to make the day extra special! It was truly the most snowy, magical proposal of my dreams

How did you know that Martina Liana Style 1110 was the one?

I wanted to find a dress with unique floral lace. The vibe I was going for was something romantic and whimsical. I was looking for something with a beautiful back, and also a little plunge in the front to have that sexy element as well. I knew what I wanted, but I was having the hardest time trying to find it… until I went to Brides of Florida and laid eyes on my dream dress! After trying on countless dresses at different stores, Martina Liana Style 1110 finally checked all of my boxes and was different from any other one I had seen!

How did you make your wedding personal to your style and love story?

Our wedding was on a blueberry farm. It is so picturesque in the blueberry fields. There were truly so many beautiful photogenic areas that fit the romantic feel we wanted for our wedding day! The bridesmaids were in a blush palette but all different dresses. The groomsmen were in navy with blush bow ties. We also had our dog walk down the aisle as the ring bearer with a matching navy suit and blush bow tie!

What was the most memorable part of your wedding?

One of the most memorable parts of the day was putting my beautiful dress on and doing our first touch where we read our written vows to each other before the ceremony. I was waiting in anticipation to have my fiancé see my dress ! Then seeing his smiling face as I walked towards him down the aisle.

Katie + Jason’s Rustic Wedding in Shades of Blue

Katie and Jason met on New Years Eve last year while bonding over champagne and their love of music (Dixie Chicks, to be particular!). 7 months later, the two were engaged while on a trip to Saint Augustine, Florida - surrounded by all of their close friends!

While planning for the big day, Cypress Pond Farms quickly became the perfect venue for their special day because of it’s elegant details and rustic barn vibes! Soft white roses and strings of eucalyptus bloomed around the space and gave a natural touch to every bouquet.

If you’re into all the blues and simple elegance, you’ll absolutely swoon over Katie and Jason’s wedding day!

Aria in Romantic Blue, Rosalie in Romantic Blue, Rosalie in Dusty Blue, Bella in French Blue, Rosalie in Better Together Blue

Katie’s girls were dressed in hues of blue in the softest layers of tulle. Instead of having her bridesmaid in one color, she picked her favorites and mixed and matched different shades within her bridal party. While planning the big day, Katie sought advice from our Revelry stylist about what colors worked well together. After her swatches arrived, she chose Romantic Blue, Dusty blue, French Blue, and Better Together Blue in tulle. Her bridesmaids had a choice of which style of dress they wanted and ordered their samples for home try on!

“I loved that the girls were able to try on their dresses at home. They were each able to decide which dress looked best on them from home,” said Katie.

Jason also wore a matching French Blue chiffon tie, while his groomsmen wore Dusty Blue chiffon ties!

Everything You Need to Know About Mother of the Bride Dresses

Prices and Where to Buy

Mother of the bride dresses can range from $20 to almost $5,000. Affordable gowns that are below $100 can be found at Nordstrom, Macy’s, David’s Bridal or the Dress outlet. They even have a “Mother of the Brides Dresses” section on their websites. For dresses between $100 and $500, you can look at Nordstrom, Macy’s, and David’s Bridal as well. When you feel like splurging over $500, Nordstrom and David’s Bridal will have what you’re looking for.

Etiquette

The best time for the mother of the bride to buy her dress is when the bride starts searching for the bridesmaids' dresses. Purchase the gown as soon as possible and before the mother of the groom. While searching for your dress you should share your options with the groom’s mother to bounce ideas or to give her a heads up on what type of dress you’re choosing, which will give her direction on what dress she should purchase. The groom’s mother will most likely appreciate this chat. You can also have your daughter notify her instead.

Don’t worry about communicating with the groom’s step-mother because you want to avoid getting involved in their family situation and the possibility of upsetting the groom’s mother.

Color

Complementing the shade of the bridesmaids’ dresses or the color scheme of the event is traditional, but not required. For example, if she prefers the wedding party to wear horizon blue, it would be fitting for you to wear a different shade such as navy blue or royal blue. The mother of the bride dress should still stand out from the bridesmaids’ dresses. It’s only forbidden to wear white or colors similar to the bride’s dress.

In the past, black dresses were looked down upon and intense bright colored gowns were to be avoided, but these social taboos have mostly been abandoned now. Popular mother of the bride dress colors are sage green, sienna, and a range of light blues. Floral and patterns dresses are acceptable too. Pick a color, print, or pattern that’s not too powerful. All the attention should be on the bride, not the mother of the bride.

The bride’s opinion on the color outweighs all because it’s for her special day and she may want the mother’s dress to be the perfect addition to the tone of the wedding. However, the bride may be unconcerned about all of it. You need to talk to her to be certain. She may have guidelines about other attire details, such as length and style. In the end, the goal is for you both to be happy about the decision.

Comfort

There are many mother of the bride dresses to choose from between a formal and casual style. The most important detail is that you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing the entire day. Long or short dresses both work. Soft and flowy pantsuits are also appropriate for the occasion. Sometimes they look like a long dress or skirt.

If you feel like showing a lot of skin and wearing a sexy dress, it is suggested to ask the bride for permission first. You should respect the bride’s wishes, especially if she’s not comfortable with the choice. You have countless other options that you’ll still look great in.

As previously stated, timing is essential. Ensure that you have enough time to have the dress altered to fit perfectly if needed. Prioritize comfort.

Other circumstances to think about while dress shopping for the wedding are the weather, venue, cultural customs, or religious customs. Seek for advice, be flexible, and follow the bride’s cues for help.

Try to choose the tones of berry red, burgundy, black and gold.Even a little tartan adds extra apathy and romance.

  • keep warm

The most important thing for a winter wedding is keeping warm. You can try to choose a slightly thicker wedding dress during the winter wedding. If it’s very cold you can thick tights under your wedding dress. Don’t care! nobody will know. In addition, don’t forget your bridesmaids and your guests will be cold too. Gift your girls a cozy faux fur shrug. To keep the bridesmaids warm during the photos and throughout the ceremony, and the warm gloves are also a good choice.Consider making an effort to ensure your guests are kept warm and cheery once they arrive. A hot drink on arrival is a nice and simple idea.Provide blankets, wraps or both for guests. The softer the blanket, the better!

  • Make beauty preparations in advance

In winter due to cold weather, it is very prone to chapped lips and dry skin.Keep lips and skin moist before the wedding, use good facial moisturizer and lip balm. And carry your lip balm and moisturizer in your clutch that day.

  • Venue layout

If possible, hold ceremonies and receptions at one or more places close to each other. This will make transportation easier if the weather is bad.Dress up your room carefully. You can decorate your room with warm elements to add a touch of warmth to the cold winter. For example, add romance With Candles(It will be dark quite early. Embrace it with lots of romantic candle light in both your ceremony and reception space),Winter Cake Toppers(For a subtle winter wedding touch get yourself a cute winter cake topper).

  • Choice of shoes

You’d better prepare two pairs of shoes in winter wedding. If you only prepare a pair of high heels. You can easily get stuck in the mud or snow when you take photos outdoors.Boots can be a stylish and practical bridal shoe choice, especially when it rains.

  • receive your guests well

If you want to receive lines, please schedule in advance so that guests do not stay outside. If your ceremony space has a large enough entrance or foyer, you can wait there and invite guests to greet you after the ceremony. Please arrange your guests as soon as possible, so as not to make your guests tremble outside the door.Do Create a Cozy Reception Space. There are plenty of ways to make your reception an inviting space.Place candles indoors for a romantic atmosphere. To play up the theme, arrange fire pits outside or have a custom hot chocolate or hot toddy bar inside.

  • Set a detailed photo schedule

It gets dark much earlier in the winter so adjust your photo schedule for more light. So don’t forget a Detailed Photo Schedule. You can coordinate a beautiful day with your photographer.Taking portraits before your ceremony is often a good idea.Keep in mind that in some parts of the world, the sky dims earlier in the day, so work with your supplier to create a schedule to make it suitable for the right lighting.

  • Don’t ignore the possibility of the weather

In winter, the weather can be unpredictable, so it is important to have an alternative plan in bad weather. Please inform your guests about the weather precautions in advance. And arrange transportation for your guests from the ceremony to the reception, or provide them with local car services to help them travel between venues. Be sure to keep in touch with your ceremony and reception site on-site coordinator to discuss any knowledge you need to address about the bad weather on your wedding day.
